CATECHIST FORMATION PROCESS AND POLICY
Process
The process for catechist formation and certification consists of sixty hours of adult faith enrichment, specialized ministry formation, and general catechetical preparation. In order to meet the requirements for certification a catechist must:
- complete the 60 (sixty) hours of adult faith formation and specialized ministry formation;
- complete one observation of an experienced catechist in their area of specialization;
- participate in a renewal experience, e.g. retreat, day of recollection, etc.
- be observed while functioning as a catechist;
- complete a minimum of one year’s catechetical experience;
- participate in an interview with the Parish Director or Coordinator of Catechetical Ministry, Youth Minister, or Principal and be recommended for certification;
- be recommended for certification by the Pastor;
- complete and submit catechist certification application forms to the appropriate office in the Vicariate for Christian Formation and Education.
- Completion of the LEARNING SESSIONS of Adult Faith Formation: Theology and Ministry of the Catechist, and the Specialized Ministry Formation: Methodology and Development Sections.
This can be achieved by: sessions taught by presenter(s), series of workshop sessions, audio/video-assisted learning sessions, or directed independent study
ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
To be certified through the Diocese of Phoenix a participant must:
- Strive to live a life guided by the Gospel, rooted in regular prayer and lived our in the Catholic faith community.
- Be at least 18 years of age.
- Complete requirements of certification process.
Submit application forms to the appropriate office within the Division of Formation and Education.

Kino is pleased to work with the Office of Catholic Schools and the Department of Family Catechesis to provide an alternative certification process for Catholic School Teachers and Catechists in Children's Catechists Youth Evangelization, and RCIA/Adult Faith Formation. Three one-week survey courses fulfill the requirements of the Diocese to be a catechist in Catholic schools. These courses fulfill the basic requirements.

CAT102 The Catechist: Purpose, Role, and Spirituality

This survey course examines the critical role of catechists as a response to God’s call to holiness. It explores the themes of conversion, ministry, and spirituality in the context of catechesis and presents an introduction to moral and faith development. (Purpose of Catechesis and Catechetical Process; Role of the Catechist and Spirituality of the Catechist; Sacraments and Liturgy and Rites; Justice and Peace: ; Diocesan Policies
This course addresses the work of catechists in the context of today’s world. It explores the family perspective of Christian living, cultural issues and discipleship in the modern world. Types of prayer, and planning prayer for catechetical settings are also discussed. (Cultural Context; Family Context; Faith & Moral Development; Discipleship; Prayer Planning
